Privacy Policy — Rate My Anime

Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Rate My Anime (“the App”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application.

Rate My Anime is operated by Bhuwan Shrestha, based in Nepal. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

What information we collect

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: when you sign up, we collect your email address, display name, and password (handled securely via Firebase Authentication — we never see your password in plain text).
  • Profile information: optional fields you choose to add, such as avatar, bio, banner image, country, gender, pronouns, and date of birth.
  • Content you create: anime lists, reviews, posts, comments, messages, polls, and other content you submit through the App.
  • Subscription information: when you purchase a VIP subscription, Google Play Billing processes the payment. We receive a confirmation token and product ID from Google — we do NOT receive or store your credit card or payment details.

Information collected automatically

  • Anime activity: your lists, ratings, watch progress, and other interactions with anime data within the App.
  • Device and usage information: app version, device model, operating system version, language preference, crash reports, and basic usage analytics (which screens are visited).
  • Advertising identifier: if you have not opted out, Google’s Advertising ID is used to personalize ads (see “Advertising” below).
  • Push notification token: if you enable notifications, we store a Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) token to deliver them.

Information from third parties

  • Anime data: information about anime titles (synopsis, cover art, episode counts, airing dates) is sourced from the AniList API. We do not receive personal data about you from AniList; this is public reference data.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide core App functionality (your account, lists, reviews, social features, messaging).
  • Personalize your experience (recommend anime, surface activity from people you follow).
  • Send transactional emails and push notifications (e.g. when someone replies to your post, if you’ve opted in).
  • Process subscription payments through Google Play Billing.
  • Detect, prevent, and address technical issues and abuse.
  • Comply with legal obligations.
  • Show ads in the free tier (unless you have an active VIP subscription or reward pass).

We do not sell your personal information.

Third-party services

The App uses the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy:

  • Firebase Authentication & Cloud Messaging (Google LLC) — for sign-in and push notifications. Policy
  • Google AdMob — for serving ads to free-tier users. AdMob may collect your Advertising ID and use it for ad personalization. Policy

Advertising

The free tier of Rate My Anime shows ads via Google AdMob, including banner ads, native ads in feeds, and optional rewarded video ads (which grant a 2-hour free VIP pass when watched).

AdMob may use your Advertising ID to deliver personalized ads. You can reset or opt out of personalized advertising in your device settings:

  • Android: Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalization
  • iOS: Settings → Privacy → Tracking → Allow Apps to Request to Track

VIP subscribers and users with an active reward pass do not see ads.

Data sharing

We share information only in these situations:

  • Other users: content you make public (your profile, lists, reviews, posts) is visible to other users of the App. Private content (DMs, drafts) is not shared with anyone except the intended recipient.
  • Service providers: with the third parties listed above, only as needed to operate the App.
  • Legal compliance: if required by law, court order, or to protect rights, property, or safety.
  • Business transfers: if the App is sold or merged, your data may transfer to the new owner under the same terms.

Data retention

We retain your account information and content as long as your account exists. When you delete your account:

  • Your profile, lists, posts, reviews, and messages are deleted within 30 days.
  • Backups may retain data for up to 90 days, after which they are purged.
  • Anonymized analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including:

  • Access: request a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Correction: update inaccurate information.
  • Deletion: request removal of your account and associated data.
  • Portability: request your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Opt-out: of personalized ads (see “Advertising” section).
  • Withdraw consent: for processing where consent is the basis.

If you are in the EU/UK, you have additional rights under GDPR/UK-GDPR including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. If you are in California, you have additional rights under the CCPA/CPRA.

Children’s privacy

Rate My Anime is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at bhuwanenoch@gmail.com and we will delete it promptly.

For users between 13 and 18, parental guidance is recommended, particularly for social features (feeds, messaging, comments).

Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), secure password storage via Firebase Authentication, and access controls on our backend systems. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

International data transfers

Our backend services are hosted on cloud infrastructure that may process data in multiple countries. By using the App, you consent to the transfer and processing of your information in those locations.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will:

  • Update the “Last updated” date at the top.
  • Notify you through the App or via email for material changes.
  • Continue protecting information collected under the previous policy according to those previous terms.

Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the new policy.
